8 Proven Psychological Traits of A High-Functioning Mind

You know you are capable. You know you can do it.
Some rocks on the road don’t divert you from your path,
It makes you aware of the mistakes you shouldn’t be making.
Take it as a lesson and move on.

When your intention meets your capability,
You can become what you always dreamt about;
-Shruti Bevara

Now, this blog is not one of those motivational rants I always do, it is deeper more intense yet informative than that, I hope you are ready for it; because each one of you reading this, will be relating to it in one way or another.

Who are High-Functioning People?

While the Psychological definition of the term “High Functioning Person” suggests people with mental health conditions or brain conditions who can perform well in some areas of their lives (for example a person with Autism, or high-functioning depression, anxiety etc.) the more general definition of the term tells a different story.
A high-Functioning Person is more like a person with high energy, a well-productive lifestyle, and a chaotic mind who likes to run an infinitely long marathon. And I mean literally runs! Runs faster than the body it is attached to, mocking and challenging the body to match its pace.

Imagine having a conversation with someone, an interesting one at that, while you are speaking your part, you start to stutter, you cannot pronounce a simple word, or you blabber something senseless, like an illogical half-broken rant, you see where I am going with this?

This happens because your mind is not paced with your mouth. And that occurs because of the energy your brain has, as a high-functioning one. In this case, the stutter can happen due to pure excitement. Excitement, Anger, and Anxiety are emotions which can interfere with or rather disrupt the train of the conversation.

The high-functioning aspect can be noticed in a person’s daily activity. Multi-tasking is one major attribute to identify someone with a high-functioning condition. Focusing on multiple tasks at a time can sound hard, yet many of us do it as if it isn’t difficult. Mothers do it all the time, and the working class do it, everyone does it.
But the question is – To what extent is multi-tasking healthy?
It is safe to say multi-tasking fuels the high-functioning aspect of the brain.

As the highs and lows of life, the energy of the brain can vary. It is like two sides of a coin. These people tend to see life in Black and White, with no shades of grey. They can be called Extremists. Producing intensely high or extremely low energy on days, which either way gets harmful in the long run.

People who know how to use their high functioning to utmost capacity and people who don’t –

People who know their asset tend to feel emotions deeper than ‘normal’ people, hence, emotionally complex, considered empaths, tend to look beyond what is shown to them, ‘outside the box‘ thinkers and achievers. They have the most unique way of approaching any problem. They are perfectionists. Visionaries. Someone who can build or break the world into a new one.

On the flip side of it, they are delusional, always lost in the part of the imaginary fiction their brain has created, their brain runs on 10 things at a time, so, never really focus on anything for longer than 5 minutes. They ‘mask’ their struggles with their high performance. They practically live in the figment of their imagination and occasionally drop into the real world. Their darker side is they often slip into mild depression (emphasis on MILD) and bounce back as if nothing possessed them. Pro procrastinators at that!

So, how to be the asset and not the liability?
How to tap into the high-functioning energy at utmost capacity?
How can we adopt the skills and habits that separate us from the wishing ones?

8 Proven Psychological Traits of High-Functioning Mind

1. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE. A high-functioning mind has a better emotional understanding as these individuals spend most of their time in their heads. Empaths. Understands and navigates nuanced social situations.

2. PERFORMANCE DRIVEN. These people are driven by numbers, goals and the stats that measure their performance and growth. They believe in actions. Visualize their goal. Devise strategies. Derive the desired output.

3. HARDCORE BELIEVER IN CHANGE. Adaptability to change with the changing trends in the economy. They possess a robust set of coping strategies and mechanisms. If not the trendsetters, they are the first ones to adapt to a new one. Adaptive. Trendsetters. Out-of-the-box thinkers.

4. HIGHLY PRODUCTIVE. These extremists are en route to gripping the world in their hands. They are hopped on the “winners ship” aiming for the moon.
Three-word mantra – Organize. Prioritize. Execute. Be it any given task.

5. SYSTEMATIC FUNCTIONERS. They are particular about their surroundings, tasks or their work, be it anything. They tend it have a vision and execute that vision into reality. Builds a system around them. Planners. Organizers. Strategists.

6. QUICK LEARNERS. To match an ever-growing world, they invest their time and energy into learning a new skill or knowledge. Something to polish or perfect their already-possessed skillset. Continuous learners. Perfectionists. Growth Seekers.

7. 360 DEGREE PERSPECTIVE. When I say a 360-degree perception, I mean they can, not only think of themselves but also can hop into other people’s shoes (minds in this case) and understand what the other person is thinking. Overthinkers. Emotionally mature. Clear on themselves.

8. SELF AWARE. Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness. A high-functioning person can perform only when they are fully aware of themselves, of every cell in their body and every nerve in their brain, of every emotion and reaction they can have over a situation.
Self Love. Better Handlers. Great Companion.

Through this piece, we have just touched the tip of a massive ice glacier. There is so much to explore and discuss on this topic, and we have just started.
This post is a drone view of the upcoming topics we will be exploring.

I hope you understand and relate to it, and also are excited for the upcoming blogs. Comment down if you can call yourself a high-functioning person!

Until next time.

  30. Such an informative and a well researched Blog you’ve written.

Earlier I used to feel little inferior (kind’of nervous) thinking “why I’m different in crowd?” “Why I couldn’t blend with the crowd?”

But this blog made me feel I’m not different, I’m just a human with high functioning brain. I can say that bcz I’ve realized pretty much of the 8 proven ways.

“Black Sheep of the Herd” you only realized me this. I won’t let myself down and this helped me a lot to gain confidence and personality. Thankyou!❤

Keep writing amazing blogs akka, very keen to read the next one.
